Forgiving God

Iheoma J. Uzomba is a Nigerian poet, researcher, and staff writer at Open Country Mag. She holds a BA in English and Literary Studies from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (Best Graduating Student, CGPA 4.72/5.00), where she was Editor-in-Chief of The Muse Journal, a creative writing journal established by Chinua Achebe in 1963. She is currently pursuing an MA at the University of Calgary. Her work has appeared in Prairie Schooner, Rattle, Palette Poetry, The Shore, Chestnut Review, and elsewhere.

About the Fellow

Iheoma J. Uzomba is a Nigerian poet, researcher, and creative strategist whose academic and literary achievements mark her as one of the most accomplished emerging voices in African poetry. Graduating as Best Graduating Student from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka with a CGPA of 4.72/5.00, she served as Editor-in-Chief of The Muse Journal #50, a creative and critical writing journal established by Chinua Achebe in 1963.

Her poetry has earned her the 2025 Glenna Luschei Prairie Schooner Award for Poetry and the 2025 ACCUTE Graduate Student Poetry Prize. She was a winner of the 2022 Lagos/London Poetry Competition and a Poetry Translation Centre (UK) UNDERTOW Fellow, demonstrating her ability to bridge Nigerian and international literary communities.

Currently pursuing an MA in English Literature at the University of Calgary with research focused on border studies and transnational memory, Uzomba continues to push the boundaries of her craft while maintaining deep roots in Nigerian literary tradition.

Fellowship Statement

Iheoma J. Uzomba's work explores themes of deconstructing religion, border crossings, and transnational memory. Her poetry manuscript 'Forgiving God' represents the kind of bold, intellectually rigorous, and emotionally resonant poetry that the Unserious Collective Fellowship seeks to support.
